Information for Mentees

INFORMATION FOR MENTEES

How do I get a Mentor?

Getting a mentor is simple. If you are a freshman or new transfer student, just go online to https://sa.txstate.edu/mentoring, Complete the online Form and hit submit. All matches are for one semester. If the mentoring relationship does not work out, the mentee need only call or email us at , and we will assign a new mentor. For more information please contact the VPSA Office at 245-2152, or at mentoring@txstate.edu.

Why Should I Join the Mentoring Program?

Colleges and universities across the nation struggle every year with how to help new students adjust to the inevitable changes of higher education. At Texas State, we pair incoming freshmen and new transfer students with Texas State upperclassmen, staff or faculty to ease the transition into the university and support the adjustments to change.

Mentees benefit in many ways. By having a friend/mentor when you arrive at Texas State, the stress of adjusting to campus is reduced. This is also directly related to higher retention of new students at Texas State, and a higher GPAs (as compared to their fellow non-mentored new students). Later, when Orientation Advisors are not around to guide you through choosing classes and activities, the mentor can be an incredible support system. Of course, naturally, if you have a problem with anything personal or academic, while your mentor may not have direct experience, they will know where to refer you so that you can get help and know that people on this campus can help.
