Academic Resources

Studies suggest that students who make use of available campus resources and develop a specific set of study strategies are significantly more likely to experience success in college. Whether working on algebra homework, completing a research paper or improving organizational skills, resources such as the Writing Center, SLAC and the Math Lab can be invaluable. Academic departments, such as Science, Mass Communication/Journalism and English, have labs that provide students with assistance. Students may also access the numerous computer labs scattered across campus. The Student Affairs Student Success Team has collected the following information to assist students in developing effective skills for meeting the demands of college life. We hope it will prove both informative and useful.

Suggestions for Making the Most of College

  • Study in groups, at least some of the time, rather than spend all of your time studying alone.
  • Work on homework for extended study sessions (2-3 hours),
rather than short periods (30-45 minutes only).
  • Adjust: develop new study skills, especially critical thinking skills (the ability to synthesize information and apply it, rather than simply learn facts).
  • Select some courses early on that are small and interesting, where you can have close contact with the professor, instead of taking only large, introductory and/or required classes.
  • Get to know one faculty or staff member each semester, and let them get to know you.

*College students report that these suggestions can improve
performance, as well as enrich and broaden the college experience.
